Poker Player Profile: Ted Forrest
If there’s ever been a pro poker player who can truly be known as ‘unpredictable,’ I think that Ted Forrest just might be above them all. Ted Forrest, to my knowledge, does not have a ‘poker nickname.’ This is somehow an important asset in the considerations. Ted Forrest does not need a nickname because he is Ted Forrest. Literally capable of playing any two cards from any positions, Ted Forrest can shift gears so quickly that just when you think you’ve pegged him, he’ll be so far around the bend that you won’t have time to blink.

Ted is someone to be studied not only for his seemingly random aggression, but for his chameleoning at the table, and his extensive ability to put the play on the other player.

There’s a reason why you see Ted Forrest at so many final tables on TV. Quickly, just from watching a couple rounds of hands with him, it becomes apparent that more so than many other players who play ‘any two cards,’ Forrest seems to have an uncanny ability to know almost without knowing when is the right time to make a move. There’s no such thing as a free card with Ted, because he always seems to know whether he is ahead or behind, and if he is ahead he is going to push you against the wall trying to figure out what to do.

Forrest is sick also in that he often plays to win pots not just by aggression, but by actually putting strange hands to work. He doesn’t have to enter a pot with a raise everytime and instead will limp to try to put things together, and even when he doesn’t he’s so in tune with what’s going on that the unmaterialized cards can still be put to use just in the face that they are still in his hand and his opponent can’t defend. Ted is a reader’s reader.

Another major of element of Forrest’s game that a lot of players fail to utilize is the fact that at his heart, Forrest has a bit of gamble in him. Though most of the time he tends to play from ahead and win by applying pressure, Forrest knows that in order to win, sometimes you have to gamble, particularly in tournament situations. A lot of the time it seems like players get so focused on the strategy side of poker that they forget that by utilizing rushes and luck one can actually turn a table on its side. Players tend to go on tilt even worse when a player is not only more skilled than them, but more lucky, and sometimes you can convince a player to almost donk off his entire stack trying to do justice against you. Forrest might be one of the best of appearing more wild than he is, and advertising himself in certain ways to get action out of players who want to ‘punish’ him for being a little looser than the next guy.

Let's just say this: when a guy is as good as Forrest, the fact that he's willing to gamble and masquerade a little more than the next guy makes him that much more scary, another reason that Forrest is one of the most revered and difficult players in all of poker.
