Launch of the Latin America Poker Tour

Just when you thought poker couldn’t expand to another new area, you hear about a new tournament somewhere just beginning for the first time and you realize how much of the world there is left to expose. Earlier this week Pokerstars.net announced the Latin America Poker Tour (LAPT), which will be kicking off very shortly, in fact May 3-5 in Rio de Janeiro Brazil.

So far there are two other LAPT tournaments already scheduled, making the line-up so far appear as follows:

LAPT Rio de Janeiro (Brazil)      Intercontinental Hotel      $2,500      May 3-5, 2008      300
LAPT San José (Costa Rica)     Ramada Plaza Herradura     $2,500 + $200     May 22-24, 2008     300
LAPT Punta del Este (Uruguay)     Mantra Resort Spa Casino     $2,500 + $200     August 7-9, 2008     300

As you can see the buy-ins for each are $2500 and have a 300 person maximum. Not a bad little kickoff for a leg of a tournament series you might never have expected.

LAPT President Glenn Cademartori said: "Poker is exploding in Latin America and the game is more than ready for its own major poker tour. It's one of the fastest-growing poker regions, and there are thousands upon thousands of players in countries like Brazil and Argentina who will love the chance to take part in events of this kind. In every regard, the LAPT is going to put Latin America on the map as the newest hotspot to play high-stakes international poker."

The LAPT comes on the feels of the immensely popular Pokerstars European Poker Tour, now currently running in its fourth season. The buyins there have maxed out with some huge names and only promise to keep growing.

Also on the heels comes the Asia Pacific Poker Tour, now about to enter its second season.

Overseeing the LAPT will be Tournament Director Mike Ward. He said: "As director of Foxwoods Resort Casino since 1996 and director of the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure in the Bahamas since its launch in 2004, I've already overseen some truly dramatic expansion of tournament poker. I'm now really looking forward to bringing my skills and energy to the Latin American Poker Tour."

Satellites are running as we speak for the LAPT events, beginning as low as $2.20 buyins.

Pretty soon they’ll be having sub-0 fifteen man tourneys in Antarctica, at this rate.
