PokerStars Breaks 150,000 Players |
January 2, 2008
As our backwards U.S. government continues to try to slow online action's roll, the legion of active online players shows we aren't going anywhere: on December 30, 2007, the online giant PokerStars broke the record for the most online players signed on at once, with a whopping 150,000 players all seated at the same time.
This new milestone breaks the Stars' previous number-bumping record. Back in February of 2006, PokerStars became the first online casino to host 100,000 simultaneous players. The occasion was even cited by the Guinness Book of Records in 2007.
It was just two days ago that they busted through that hurdle with the most online action ever recorded. 150,000 online gamblers putting their real-life money to virtual work.
The new record was quite evidently brimming when the quarterly Stars' Sunday Million tournament with a $1050 buy-in clocked in a screen-popping 1800 entrants, which together created a $1.8 million dollar prize pool.
I spent a lot of the end of last year ranting about the double-think of our government's trying to pull back online action, but obviously their efforts aren't doing much of any good. So we'll be happy to let them go on stumbling and bumbling and wasting out tax money paying off foreign markets while we continue to enjoy check-raising with the nuts in our underwear at 3 AM.
Meanwhile, a quick look at tournament results over the past few months shows that new millionaires are being crowned seemingly every day, with massive online tournaments and events that kind of continue to boggle my mind. Seeing Dario Minieri cash in his online player points to get a free Porsche should be enough to make just about anyone crack a smile, no matter how ridiculous his play and/or scarf was in this year's broadcast of the World Series of Poker.
Things are big and wild and thribing. I have a feeling this year it's only going to get better. |
