You can call him “The GodFather of Poker”, you can call him “Texas Dolly” but you had better not call him after he check-raises you all-in because if you do, chances are, you are getting felted.
Doyle Brunson was born on August 10, 1933 in Longworth, Texas a small country town miles from anything. In his youth, he was a star athlete. He earned two scholarships, one in basketball and one in track and field. His talent in basketball was undeniable and a future in the NBA with the Minneapolis Lakers was almost a certainty until a freak workplace accident caused Brunson to shatter his leg. The damage to his leg would never heal properly and it was time for him to change his focus.
While focusing on obtaining his Masters while in college Doyle also started playing for serious money. After he finished school, he realized that there was too much money in poker to be ignored. He became part of a group of travelling poker players driving across the states looking for a game to play in. Throughout the years, Doyle Brunson has faced impossible odds and through all of his challenges, he has emerged victorious, so to speak. His wisdom, stories and knowledge allows him to maintain the force that has kept him successful at the poker table for half a century.
In the 1960’s Doyle was part of a group of people that helped bring Texas Hold’em to the masses by introducing it to Las Vegas. A short time later it became the main event of the World Series of Poker and has not slowed down in popularity since. In 1977 and 1978, he won the main event of the WSOP back to back, amazingly enough with Ten-deuce as his starting hand, for the final winning hand, both times. A short time later, he assembled a group of some of the greatest poker players in the game and created a revolutionary poker book, Super System. Overnight the game of poker changed and now, with so many players having access to the secrets of the pros the game has never been the same.
Doyle Brunson has won a total of ten WSOP bracelets and a WPT title. He has written several more books including the sequel to Super System These achievements are just a couple of a career that spans the most exciting and difficult decades of the game of poker.
