Gustav Hansen, also known as Gus Hansen and known as ‘The Great Dane’ was born near Copenhagen, Denmark on February 13, 1974. He currently calls Monte Carlo, Monaco home but travels extensively around the world to play in the largest tournaments available.

While growing up, Gus was heavily involved in several different athletic endeavours. In his youth, Gus was a tennis champion. As he grew older, he looked for other ways to stay competitive and this led him to Backgammon.

He travelled on the Backgammon tour and played in several tournaments. Like many other backgammon players Gus discovered poker and started making the transition from backgammon, to poker. A mathematical genius, Gus has been able to build a strong foundation of math around his poker game. Many consider his style to be wild, aggressive, and reckless, however when you look at his results it is clear that he is comfortable with the style that he plays.

Throughout his tournament career, Gus has accumulated over $5,000,000 in winnings. He has won three WPT open events, the most of any player, and he beat a field of 747 players to win the Aussie Millions in January of 2007. In addition to tournaments, Gus also plays in many high stakes cash games including the ‘Big Game’ in Bobby’s Room at the Bellagio. Whether the cash game is on-line or at a brick and mortar card room you can be sure Gus will be there.
