Last year Mike Vela came close to greatness when he barely missed World Poker Finals final table with a still impressive 13th place finish. When he entered the World Poker Finals in Season 6 of the World Poker Tour he was determined to take down the championship.
With a strong performance during the earlier part of the tournament, Vela was able to take command of the final table as one of its early chip leaders. He used his position to beat up on his opponents at each and every possible chance. Playing aggressively was working for Vela and eventually when he got lucky and hit a jack on the river to eliminate Tom Dwan, he truly hit his stride and was fully positioned to take down the whole event. Vela went on to dominate his remaining opponents, both of whom were formet WPT Final Event champions, and win the tournament. His first place victory earned this upstate New Yorker more than just a title; he got to take home an incredible $1.7 million in cash! Congratulations to Mike Vela.
